Intercultural Design - Projects 1,2&3: Proposal, Data Collection and Visual Design
05.02.2024- 22.03.2024/ Week 1-Week 7
The first design has no meaning. It just appears as a tree. Another design
aspect an visuals is that visual that represents something. It comes with
meaning and cultural references with value. But something the meanings
don't really go across quite correctly. So this is where design
sensitivity comes in.
Cultural sensitivity helps designers to design their visuals that not only
encompass aesthetics, but it's also pleasant to look at. It's correctly
portrayed, but also it can function correctly in terms of perceived
information as well as providing the overall expected user experiences.

INSTRUCTION
Lecture
Week 1
First of all, our lecturer took us through the MIB to let us have a basic
knowledge of our projects. During briefing time, we know about what we
going to do for our current project and our future projects.
Visuals are powerful persuasive mediums to provide most of our
information about the world.
Visuals are...
Examples of design
Examples: Tattoos
For sailors, the tattoos they have on their bodies symbolize the story and journeys that they unlock along the way and the not-equal star means a sailor who can always find their way home.

Sailor's tattoos
For Japanese, traditionally, Japanese tattoos began as a means of conveying
societal status, as spiritual symbols, as a sort of charm for protection as
well as symbolizing devotion, not unlike modern religious tattoos.
Japanese traditional tattoos
As a designer, we need to be always aware of the culture, and once this
symbolism and context to create designs that are inclusive and resonate with
diverse audiences.
Design significance
-what we need to do is identify the social, cultural and political spheres
where the design elements reside.
-we need to look back to the root of the purpose of the design.

Cultural Sensitivity Awareness
Project 1-Proposal (Week 1- Week 3)
In this project, we need to think about what topic we need to do and write a
proposal about a general theme "Cultural Sensitivity in Design".
Our group have discussed what topic we want to do. We tried to search about
Japanese culture because we have to go to Osaka
Discussion progress (PDF)
After discussion, we decided to do Kabuki as our topic.
We've been assigned our own jobs. I am doing sketches/visual references with
Sue Zhiun. After I had done my part. I think it is still too little stuff so
I added on the makeup of Kabuki, costumes of Kabuki, Kabuki Theatre and
Props of Kabuki

Project 2-Data Collection
In this task, We need to collect data on our topic through many methods.
We are using three types of methods to collect data which are observation
study, online research and Google form survey.
For our observation study, we go to Osaka to collect data about Kabuki. We
decided to go to the Kabuki Theatre in Kyoto to watch Kabuki to collect
data. Unfortunately, it is shown on March 2 and we go back on March 1. So,
we didn't watch the Kabuki show. However, we also have collect some Kabuki
data at Osaka and Kyoto.

We also do online research. For online research, I took part in doing online
research in emoji part and Hari Raya part.
Lastly, we also do a Google form survey to collect our data. Here is our
Google form link:

Project 3-Visual Design (Week 5- Week7)
In this project, we need to create a visual design for our topic.
For our group, we decided to do a set of Kabuki emoji sticker packs.
I take part in drawing sketches. I draw the sketches using Photoshop.

Furthermore, what I did in this project I created a few types of Kabuki masks in week 5.

I also added shadow before my group members combined the elements together.
