Task 2- Visual Analysis

INSTRUCTION

Task 2: Visual Analysis
This task requires us to assess, investigate, document and analyse the existing art/design work we selected in Task 1. We will study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, and effectiveness of the design for the UNSDG goal that we have chosen.

Recap
Lecture 6: Visual Analysis
Method of understanding design that focuses on visual elements and principles
Description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake
A skill that helps people read and critically interpret images
-visual analysis includes three phase
    i) phase 1: observation
        a) means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design
        b) do not read beforehand about the design at all
        c) looking, thinking, and finding good language
    ii) phase 2: analysis
        a) think about your observations
        b) combine to create design principles that complete that work of design/art
    iii) phase 3: Interpretation
        a) fused with facts
        b) think about the meaning and purpose

Fig 1.1 Digital illustrator "Another Reality" by Catpaku on 14 August 2020

Observation:
This landscape artwork features two buildings with pavement on top. There are two traffic lights at the top and the one on the left side is nearer. Then, there are also two bollards on the top middle of the artwork. In the centre, a girl in a red top and blue pants sits in the middle of a rectangle-shaped line, her leg extending into the sea. Marine life, including whales, turtles, jellyfish and colourful fish, resides beneath the sea. This artwork is mainly composed of rectangles and cylinders. Dominated by blue and grey hues, with accents of red, the artwork also includes a hydrant at the bottom right.

Analysis:
This artwork is symmetrically balanced. The emphasis is on the girl at the centre wearing the red top. The girl is emphasised because the colour of the surroundings is mainly blue colour (cold colour) and the girl's top is red colour (warm colour) so we can straightly see her. For the movement, we can see it from the fish. We can sense which way each fish is going by the direction of its head. We also can see the movement from the rectangle-shaped line. The rectangle-shaped line movement is from right to left. Then, we can see the repetition at the crossroad lines, fish even though they are different species, the buildings and the bollards. Lastly, we can see harmony & unity in this artwork because the upper part of the photo shows the advanced city and the lower part shows the vastness of the ocean and sea creatures. The whole picture looks harmonious.

Interpretation:
This work strongly questions the need for these cities to be surrounded by roads. It encourages a complete reevaluation of the urban environment by emphasising the crucial role that the oceans play on our planet. The little girl represents humans. People need to abandon harmful practices and live in harmony with marine life. Besides, this is what is emphasised in SDG 14. Oceans and marine ecosystems harbour immense biodiversity, supporting a wide array of species. SDG 14 emphasizes the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity and ecological balance.
